Many of us have been successfully innoculated against the Bible by our early church school instruction. The chances are we were taught about flawless heroes, not flesh and blood people with plenty of warts and feet of clay. The writers of Scripture did not gloss over the glaring deficiencies as is evidenced by the straightforward account of David's affair with Bathsheba and his planned death of Uriah. Yet, this David became the prototype for the Messiah of Israel. The writers do not condone his sin, but they take note of his culpability before God, and his agonized repentance.
