Many scholars agree that Jesus' cleansing of the Jerusalem Temple was the incident which led directly to his crucifixion. If Satan and his cohorts in Palestine believed that killing Jesus would end his kingdom, they were operating with incredibly bad intelligence. That was certainly the case with King Croesus, the sixth century B.C. king of Lydia in Asia Minor. He went to the Oracle at Delphi asking for advice on whether or not to attack the Persians. The Oracle replied, "If you go to war, you will destroy a great empire." Croesus launched the attack in full confidence of victory. Instead, he was decisively defeated, after which the Persians invaded Lydia, captured the capital, and threw Croesus into chains. The embittered Croesus sent a delegation to Delphi for a second visit, this time with the question, "Why did you deceive me?" The priestess serving the Oracle replied, "You were not deceived. Indeed, a great empire has been destroyed." -- Sherer
