Many people complain about weather reports and insist that they are too frequently wrong. Weather forecasts are correct the vast majority of the time, but it is still not an exact science even today. Weather forecasters work from a model issued by the National Weather Service generated by a supercomputer in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. Local forecasts are then made from local data.
The most accurate predictor of production in the United States is Purdue University's Bill Uhrig, who uses 25 or 30 variables and his own insights. But even he once urged farmers to sell soybeans at $6 a bushel before seeing the price rise to $13. Of the models and all the rest, Peter Sousounis of the University of Michigan says, "They are just termed guidance, as opposed to something from God."
