Many commentators agree that Hebrews is written to a tired congregation who grows
lethargic at the prospect of facing more persecution (Thomas Long, Hebrews: A Bible
for Teaching and Preaching [Atlanta: Westminster John Knox Press, 1997]). How
does a congregational leader of a smaller sized church compete with megachurches,
malls, and satellite television on Sunday mornings?
Rather than putting on another workshop, the author of Hebrews preaches a long sermon. Hebrews 10:12 reminds hearers that Jesus has indeed experienced the same pain they experience and is seated at the right hand of God. Such a priest is in a position to travel with anybody on their faith journey through both the valleys and mountaintops.
Greta is a middle-aged, single mom who has made her share of mistakes. One of her sons is in the armed forces and the other is working in a middle-management job. Allyson just moved with her two young children into the trailer park where Greta lives. Greta is in a position to show Allyson how she raised her two boys in this community. Greta can encourage Allyson to expect that her children can reasonably obtain success. Neither the worldly pagan value system, nor the legalistic religious system can be as helpful to Allyson as having Greta as a mentor. This is a snapshot of the case that the author of Hebrews is making to his audience.
