A male German shepherd gave freeway travelers in Los Angeles a poignant lesson in steadfast compassion when he guarded an injured female Doberman pinscher lying at the edge of the road. Animal control officers said he covered the injured dog's body with his own when he saw cars coming. The Doberman died, but the shepherd was claimed by several dozen bidders who wanted to buy him from the pound. Finally an auction brought $1,000 for the faithful animal.
The dog's steadfast love is by no means typical of the human world. The prophet laments the unreliable and halfhearted characteristic of most people. "Your love is like a morning cloud," he says.
God gives us unnumbered examples of his steadfast love day after day ("His going forth is as sure as the dawn"), but we respond with a love that has all the durability of the morning mist. The high-point of God's love is seen in the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. Can we do any less than respond with an answering steadfastness in our own love?
