Macao is a city 40 miles west of Hong Kong. It is on the coast of South China. On the crest of a hill in Macao, ruins of an old Roman Catholic cathedral stood against the sky. Tradition said that the cathedral was built around 1500 by the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama. A violent typhoon had destroyed the cathedral, but its front wall remained standing. On the top of the wall people had placed a large bronze cross. It towered defiantly over the wrecks of wind, tide, and time.
