Trouble is often the channel through which grace operates best. Fearful, guilty, fleeing from Esau whom he had consciously cheated, sleep must have been a welcome escape -- respite from Jacob's troubled thoughts. In his waking moments he wouldn't have sought God because of shame. Sleeping, his subconscious, trained by his heritage, opened to God, who responded to his unexpressed needs. The results of the encounter for Jacob were an awesome sense of Presence and an awareness of his own shortcomings.
