The Advent expectation of the coming of Jesus Christ is not terminated by Christmas. Indeed, the expectation is intensified. The Christ who came at Bethlehem will come again (the Parousia).
My wife is a trim and pretty woman. For reasons I don't fully comprehend, she is trying to lose some weight. She has cut down on her calories and increased her exercise program.
The other night, I became hungry while we were watching television. Experience suggested that she must be hungry too, so I asked if she wanted me to prepare a snack. She hesitated at first. Then, as I made a cheese sandwich for myself, she ate half a grapefruit. It was a big thing and very juicy!
After eating the grapefruit, she said, "You know, that was supposed to satisfy my hunger, but it just made me hungrier!" Then it dawned on me why grapefruit are often eaten at the beginning of a meal: They whet our appetites instead of satisfying them.
There is a hunger in the human heart. The only thing that will satisfy it is the fullness of the God revealed in Jesus Christ. The revelation of God in the Baby of Bethlehem only whets our appetites for more. Our hunger will not be completely satisfied until Christ comes again in the fullness of his power and glory.
