The wilderness Israelites did not recognize the authority of God in Moses' leading. It is interesting that after they suffered the consequences of their rebellion, they wanted Moses to pray for them God progressively reveals himself to his people. Centuries later, God's revelation in Christ was rebelled against by the Jews. Jesus drew a parallel between this incident in Numbers, saying, "... even so must the Son of Man be lifted up."
