Sermantics is the study of words and meanings, and their influence on human behavior. We have so conditioned our minds that when we hear a word we immediately have a picture of it before us. Some words are quite negative and leave us much depressed. Some writers seem to delight in writing negatively and often defensively.
On the other hand, there are words which are positive and powerful. They set us free! We all enjoy the inspiration of affirmation. For example, Romans 8:35-39 contains "The Great Affirmation of the Christian faith."
Other expressions we use include:
"Christ is risen!"
"We are more than conquerors through him that loved us."
"I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded."
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
What power there is in such expressions! We never cease to thrill upon hearing them again. Lent gives us opportunity to affirm our faith.
