The Cathedral Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, Episcopal, in Washington, D.C. (also known as the Washington Cathedral or the National Cathedral), was begun in 1907 and is still unfinished. It is the fifth largest cathedral in the world. The cathedral's master carver is Vincent Palumbo, who works to translate the cathedral sculptors' visions into stone. He has spent most of his adult life working on the cathedral, and he expects to spend the rest of it doing the same thing. "I feel like I am a part of it," he says. "To build a cathedral is important. If you don't believe in God, in spiritual life, I don't think you can accomplish much in life."
As grand as that cathedral is, the living church of Jesus Christ is greater. It will transcend time and extend into eternity. You and I are part of that living church through faith in Jesus Christ. "He is the one who holds the whole building together and makes it grow into a sacred temple dedicated to the Lord. In union with him, you, too, are being built together with all the others into a place where God lives through the Spirit." (Ephesians 2:21,22 TEV)
What is more, we are privileged to share in the building of that church! Our instructions come from the risen and now ascended Christ: "And in his name the message about repentance and the forgiveness of sins must be preached to all nations ..." (Luke 24:47)
Isn't it great to be able to say, "I am a part of it!"
