A group of independent engineers concluded that the skywalks that collapsed at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kansas City last summer, killing 113 persons, did not meet steel industry stress standards, and probably would have collapsed under their own weight. In other words, they probably would have fallen sometime, regardless of whether anyone was on them. This opinion was based on a Kansas City Times-sponsored study of government data on the walkway debris. What a terrible consequence of somebody's failure to supply the strength of steel needed!
