In the temple-cleansing episode, the Gospels give a counterbalance to a frequent picture of a sweet, mild Jesus Here he is angry ... angry as he bursts into a church basement and overturns tables while on-looking eyes flash and cheeks flush. A Japanese man told me once that he was attracted to Jesus but he could never be a Christian. Why? He responded that the Christians he knew were always happy and sometimes he was not. I responded that he should see Christians when they get angry (Martin Luther King, for example). There are times to be angry for the right reasons. Anyone seriously praying the Lord's prayer and reciting the petition, inviting the Lord's kingdom to come, already has a continuous "burr under the saddle." Things are not as they should be. There are rituals to overturn; false pieties and idolatrous worship to undo; prejudices to destroy. The creating Spirit may be angry and is always restless.
