Living during times when food...

Living during times when food is scarce is never a pleasant experience. The people of Malawi were hit with a devastating famine in 2001 and 2002. Floods and cyclones destroyed much of the crops one year, and drought conditions the next left most rural areas with inadequate food. Some people tried to survive on wild fruits, grass seeds, and banana roots. This lead to many deaths as some of the fruits were poisonous. Other farmers, in their desperation, began to eat premature green maize, narrowing their chances of harvestable crop.
