Impatience with disease may lead the researcher to find a cure for it. Impatience with our own sluggishness may prompt us to more energetic service. Some impatience serves a good purpose.
But most impatience is negative and counter-productive. Bishop Gerald Kennedy wrote in With Singleness of Heart:
As I look back over my ministry, I am convinced that most of the pastoral mistakes (and there have been many) were caused by lack of patience. Here is a man in trouble which he may or may not understand. But you feel sure that you understand it and so you want to cure him right now. Without any waiting or investigation, you try to force your way into his life. He resents it and with all the good intentions in the world you find yourself locked outside. The pass is blocked.
In Numbers 21:4-9 we learn a universal truth: God cannot help a people who have become impatient with him. The pass is blocked.
