The leprosy bacterium was first identified by Dr. G. Armauer Hansen in 1874. Since then this infirmity has been known as Hansen's Disease. It has many similarities to the organism that causes tuberculosis. Leprosy isn't nearly as contagious as people used to believe. You can be married to someone with leprosy and have only a 5 percent chance of contracting it. Hansen's Disease is very treatable today, and very curable.
