Learning a foreign language is an intricate process. First, there are all those new sounds to learn. Even the vowels we're used to may be pronounced very differently from English equivalents. And then there are the odd vowels, like the German O, which sounds like a combination of the English "ah" and "O." And all this has to be learned before we can go about building a vocabulary and learning how to say "I want" rather than "he wanted."
