In Lawrence Sargent Hill's novel Stowaway there is a character named O'Hara. O'Hara is first mate on a ship called the "Liberty Belle" and he resolves to make something of his remaining years. This resolve is put down by a fellow seaman who says it makes no difference. O'Hara responds, "You're wrong, mister. The whole world may not be mine. But the space of it I'm in --my part of it --is. It may not be for sure, or for much, or for long. But while I'm in it, it'll know me." (p. 117)
