By the latter half of the first century A.D., Christians were persecuted as a policy of the Roman Empire. This was different from local religious or "township" persecutions described in the book of the Acts of the Apostles. In the empire-wide persecutions, Christians were declared "criminals" on a number of charges which look ludicrous to us today, but which were taken with utmost seriousness at the time. Historians speak of ten persecutions through the first three centuries.
