In the late fall of 1990 as Saddam Hussein seized Kuwait and threatened the economic and political stability of the Middle East not a few evangelists and so-called prophetic teachers issued warnings that Armageddon and the return of Christ were imminent.
Charles Taylor, the host of the television show "Today in Bible Prophecy," declared: "Saddam Hussein is just kind of an activator for bringing it all together. It's time to rejoice for the Christians. We're going home."
Billy Graham was quoted as saying: "I would not predict we are near the end of the age, although I personally think we are."
What has fueled this speculation are the numerous references in the book of Revelation and in other prophetic books to the rise and fall of Babylon and its relationship to contemporary Iraq.
Unfortunately, such obsession with setting dates and naming names regarding the end time has been going on for 2,000 years. In our lifetime some of us have seen Hitler, Stalin, and now Saddam identified as the anti-Christ, only to be proven wrong again and again.
The most telling rebuttal to such dangerous speculation are the words of Jesus himself: "But of that day or that hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father (Mark 13:32)."
