There's an old sermon illustration, used so often that it is trite, but it is relevant to this passage. At the end of time, all the peoples of the world were gathered before God. Rather than feeling any repentance for wrongdoing, they were inclined to be defensive. After all, God had not had to live through the things they had -- persecution, slavery, poverty, suffering. A group approached God to suggest that before he would be qualified to be their judge, he would have to endune what they had endured.
