When Bill W. and Dr. Bob established Alcoholics Anonymous in 1934 they rediscovered a principle that caused the early church to grow and prosper. It was the principle of mutual helpfulness. An alcoholic must admit that he or she is powerless to solve the problem alone. Members of A.A. depend upon each other to keep from drinking. What they give away in support they get back in sobriety.
