A minister on retreat with high school students confessed that he was aware of the harmful desire for things materialistic. Describing this temptation as dangerous to his spiritual life, he asked the students for their experiences and suggestions. One young man related a story he had read somewhere about a wild duck which landed in a farm-yard to eat with some tame ducks. He enjoyed himself so much that he stayed for several months eating the same corn and mash the tame ducks ate. Fall came and his wild companions flew over, giving him the call that it was time to go. The duck still had the wild urge to be in the sky, so he flapped his wings and ran, trying to lift himself. But he was unable to raise himself off the ground. He'd gotten too fat and was out of practice fending for himself. The next fall he didn't even hear when the wild ducks called.
