Barnabas is a Hebrew name which means "Encourager." And in the text Barnabas lives up to his name.
1. The church in Jerusalem sends him to Antioch to encourage the new fellowship and this he does.
2. Barnabas finds Paul in nearby Tarsus. Paul has been converted twelve or thirteen years now. And Barnabas wants to give him a break to serve more responsibly in the church.
3. His encouragement is contagious. The Antioch church hears of famine in Jerusalem, realizes the Christians will be discouraged, and decides to send help.
