Kids growing up on the beach cities of the West Coast get used to running around barefoot nearly year-round. You can see them running down the shoreline streets, clean from the surf but with the bottom of their feet black with dirt. The children will soon be home, tracking in dirt on freshly-scrubbed floors and clean carpets.
Their loving parents will take time to lift up their dirty soles and wash off the dirt from the busy life the children have led that day. And parents will do this bying act, not from any debt they owe their little girl or boy, but because the parents love their child.
We too are washed and renewed, reborn and saved through the kindness and love of God our Savior, "not because of any righteous things we have done, but because of his mercy."
When next we venture out, we can remember the thorough cleaning job the Lord has done on our dirty "soles." In remembering his cleaning us so well, we have the faith to avoid the gutters, the mudholes, the beach-tar and the bubble gum we may not have noticed earlier in our "souls" adventures.
