Julie grew up in a large city; she didn't really know about darkness. David grew up on the
prairies; he knew. Julie and David married and moved to David's small farm in North
Dakota. There were several yard lights on the farm that kept the deep darkness at bay;
Julie didn't venture out of the lights' sphere.
One night, dark clouds appeared on the western horizon signaling a storm. David and Julie made sure the animals were safely rounded up, then headed for the house. The thunder rumbled and by late evening the storm arrived. It wasn't long before a bolt of lightning took out the power line. The house and yard went dark -- pitch dark. Julie had never experienced such darkness before. Candles helped some but not enough to ease Julie's fears. Across the flat prairie, David and Julie could see that the lights in town were still on. Julie insisted that they go to town and spend the night at David's folks.
For Julie, the lights of town must have seemed like the light Isaiah wrote about: They shone in the darkness and when David and Julie arrived in town, they gave her great joy.
