John's vision was "a new heaven," "a new earth," and "new Jerusalem." He worshiped the One who said, "I make all things new." Do we realize how central that word "new" is in Christianity? Paul spoke of persons becoming "new creations." Jesus spoke of New Commandments.
One conviction has always been central in my ministry --God's ability to make all things new. He gives us new beginnings. His grace produces new persons.
Translating that conviction into practice means operating on the assumption that no situation is hopeless and no person is beyond redemption. The miracles of new lives happen all the time in churches, Alcoholics Anonymous, and prisons. That is what makes our efforts worthwhile. In a forest fire near where I vacationed, convicts volunteered to help fight the destructive blaze. One of them said, at the end of an exhausting but productive day: "We get a chance to do something useful. We don't mind doing the work. We feel as though we give something back to society." That reminded me anew of the worth and potential of even those in prison who have committed serious crimes. Even they can become "new"! So can you and I!
