John's theme is darkness and light. It is the world's theme -- darkness and light. We can travel to outer space, live in homes that the old princes of India would envy, develop technology from micro-chip watches to outer space satellites. We have prolonged life and have destroyed the ancient plagues. Yet we are caught up in fear of genocide war destruction to the planet, incurable diseases and self-inflicted ills like drugs and alcohol. It is darkness and light. The message of the gospel is that Christ is (still) the light of the world. And seeks an entrance to our world.
Holman Hunt painted a famous picture "Christ Standing at the Door." (Behold I stand at the door and knock.) When it was pointed out to him that he had forgotten to paint in a handle to the door, the painter replied, "I had not forgotten. This door opens only from the inside."
