John Wesley went, with his brother, Charles, to serve as a missionary to the Indians in Georgia. His mission was not successful, and he returned to England very disappointed. He was searching for a deeper spiritual faith for himself, and was much impressed with the faith of some Moravians on board the ship of his return voyage.
However, on May 24, 1738, a spiritual miracle happened. On that Sunday morning he attended the service at St. Paul's Cathedral and felt very close to God. That evening he went to a mission on Aldersgate Street for another service. There someone began to read Martin Luther's preface to the book of Romans. Suddenly the spiritual rebirth took place in the heart of Wesley. He said, "I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone for salvation and an assurance was given me that he had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death: and then I testified openly to all there which I now first felt in my heart."
John Wesley was truly anointed by the Holy Spirit that night at the mission on Aldersgate street. On this special day, we emphasize that Jesus was anointed by the Holy Spirit, but so have other great Christian leaders since that day.
