John Gillespie Magee Jr. was an American pilot serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force
in England during the Second World War. In 1941, Magee died as the Spitfire he
was flying collided with another plane inside a cloud. After this young flyer's death, they
found a poem he had written, expressing the exhilaration of flight, that for him was a
mystical experience:
Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
