John Fawcett (1740-1817), born and raised in England, was converted under the fiery preaching of George Whitefield during the great Evangelical Revival of the eighteenth century. Eventually, he became a minister of a small Baptist congregation in a Yorkshire village in the north of England. One day, he received a call to a prominent London church. He was pleased at the prospect of a larger salary and a larger group with whom to share the gospel.
