John did not have a high-school diploma (he had to drop out and go to work to help support his family). He did not speak with polished words (in fact he seldom spoke). John was too shy to teach a Sunday school class; too reserved to sing in the choir. But he lived the kind of life one could readily recognize as faithful. In worship every Sunday, a quiet giver of a tithe, a family man, John possessed deep faith and confidence in God.
This shy and often unnoticed man was appointed to serve on the church council because he possessed a wisdom seldom seen. The few times John spoke, he spoke raw truth. Every problem, every situation presented to the church council John would confront with insight and thoughtfulness, while others reacted with emotion or meaningless babble.
John possessed the kind of wisdom and understanding James speaks of in today's text. His good life, meekness, and peaceableness were above reproach. John's church was fortunate to have him as a member.
