Johannes Kepler lived in a tumultuous time in Germany (1571-1630). Wars lasted as long
as thirty years. Diseases ravaged entire towns. His mother was tried as a witch. His father
was a mercenary, killed in war.
Kepler was Galileo's friend. Isaac Newton called him a giant of science. During his lifetime, he tried to find meaning in the planets' motions. He also struggled to understand the Bible and to live faithfully with God.
Amidst conflicting expressions and understandings of the Christian faith, Kepler was instructed and comforted by Martin Luther's continually pointing people to the Bible and not to himself. Luther said, "I pray you leave my name alone. Call yourselves not Lutherans but Christians. I have not been crucified for anyone." Such a faith helped Kepler to understand the Bible and, thus, to understand himself within the universe and eternity.
