Jesus learned obedience through what he suffered.
Those who championed the downtrodden prior to the great American Civil War often followed in his steps. In the forefront was William Lloyd Garrison, president of the American Anti-
Slavery Society.
Garrison came to expect abuse from his enemies as a matter of course. In time he became quite hardened to it, as well as nimble when dodging missiles fired at him from unfriendly audiences. Consequently, when he actually received praise for his activities, he was sometimes hard put for an appropriate response.
On one occasion he was honored for his efforts at a banquet given in his honor by the British Anti-Slavery Society. They presented him with a gold watch. Said Garrison, upon receiving the gift, "If this had been a rotten egg I should have known what to do with it. But since it is a gold watch, I am at a loss for words."
