Jesus had told them that one day they would stand before councils, judges and governors and would be put to the test for their faith. These words from Acts record the reaction of the apostles after they had returned from just such a hearing. They came back not despondent, not depressed, not ready to give up. If anything, they came back more firmly convinced than ever before of the power of God. During the early days of the Reformation a papal envoy came to see Martin Luther. He told Luther what would happen if he insisted on pursuing his present course. The envoy warned him that in the end all his supporters would desert him and that he would stand completely alone. "Where will you be then?" demanded the envoy. "Then as now," Luther replied, "in the hands of God." -- Joseph
