Jesus Christ is the same...

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever," writes the author of Hebrews (v. 8). In spite of that assertion, images of Jesus have varied widely down through the centuries, often reflecting more our own ideal self than the man from Nazareth described in the Gospels. For example, Thomas Dekker, an English dramatist at the beginning of the seventeenth century, described Jesus as "a soft, meek, patient, humble, tranquil spirit, the first true gentleman that ever breathed." One wonders, after considering such a portrait, why anyone would ever bother to crucify Jesus? -- Bristow
