Jesus’ feeding of the 5,000 was regarded as so important that it is recorded in all four gospels. Giving food to the hungry topped the list of loving deeds in the parable of the sheep and goats (Matthew 25:35). The Roman emperor Julian, vocal enemy of Christianity and self-proclaimed pagan, nonetheless admitted that “these Christians do not merely feed their own poor; they feed the poor of the whole city.” Pastor mayor of New York City, Fiorello LaGuardia, once served as a judge in a police court.
