Jeremiah was a fearless spokesman...

Jeremiah was a fearless spokesman for the Lord, even when it brought the charge of undermining the spirit of the people. He would not speak falsely as the prophet Hananiah had done.
There are many examples in Scripture which illustrate loyalty to God transcends loyalty to one's country. When Daniel regarded the king's law as being in conflict with the demands of his God, he refused to bow before the image of Nebuchadnezzar. Perhaps the classic example of refusing obedience to temporal authority was Peter's refusal to obey the command not to preach the Gospel. His comment is still widely quoted when there is civil disobedience, "We ought to obey God rather than man." (Acts 5)
Several places in the Gospels show Jesus as less than cooperative with state authority, especially in the last hours of passion. He reminded Pilate, "You would have no authority over me at all, if it had not been granted you from above."
Blind obedience to civil authority is foreign to the Scriptures. Loyalty and obedience to God are first and foremost for the Christian. It is not a question of having the courage to disobey the government, but whether we have the courage to disobey the Word of God.
