Jennifer Freyd introduced the term, "Betrayal Trauma Theory," which allows doctors to predict the psychological changes a person goes through when dealing with betrayal. For example, one of the changes that victims of child abuse go through is memory suppression. In a 1991 speech, Freyd stated, "The psychic pain involved in detecting betrayal ... is an evolved, adaptive, motivator for changing social alliances. In general it is not to our survival or reproductive advantage to go back for further interaction to those who have betrayed us.
