On January 8, 1642, Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei died in Arceti, Italy, at age 78. After Galileo formally proposed that the earth revolved around the sun, church authorities in Rome found him guilty of heresy in 1633 and sentenced him to life imprisonment. He was forced to publicly recant, but after his death, a fragment of his writings revealed the following note: "The Bible shows the way to go to heaven, not the way the heavens go."
