In January of 1995, the United States came very close to being the target of a Russian nuclear missile attack. It seems that Norway had launched a rocket to put a weather satellite into orbit. But Russian defense forces looked at their radars and thought that missile was coming from a United States nuclear submarine in the icy waters off of the Norwegian Sea. So the Russians immediately prepared for a full-scale retaliation against the U.S. It was only with less than three minutes before those missiles were to be launched that the Russians determined that it was a false alarm.
