Jane Goodall studied chimpanzees in Tanzania's Gombe National Park for over 35 years, beginning in 1960 -- the longest field study of animals in the world. Only by closely identifying with them and living with them for a considerable period of time did she truly learn about them, such as the war that raged for four years between two communities of chimps. Her understanding enabled her to campaign for their welfare in humane laboratories, and helped establish orphanages for offspring of chimps left without parents by poachers and disease.
