James Turrell is an artist who does wonders with light. For him light is a physical presence, a material in its own right, not just something that illuminates the rest of the world. His ability to make light seem real was illustrated in 1980 when he held a show at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. A guest tried to lean against one of his light "sculptures" and fell through it, breaking her wrist!
