Jacob was an unhappy lad as he made ready for the falling night and found sleep on that site under the city of Luz. He had fled from his home leaving behind a very beloved mother, a father whom he had deceived and a brother whom he had cheated. Before him lay the darkness and all the uncertainty of life as well as fear that his brother would overtake him. With a stone for a pillow, he sought sleep but was awakened from his fitful slumbers to behold, of all things, a ladder stretched from earth to heaven and angels ascending and descending. And he heard the voice of the Lord!
