Jack and Irene had been married in our church in 1937, and they'd been faithful members ever since. They'd gone through many hard times together -- the war, the death of their second child, the deaths of their parents, watching their adult children pull away from the church, Jack's heart attacks and subsequent surgery, and now Jack and Irene had been hit by a drunk driver. Irene had been killed instantly. Jack had severe injuries but the doctors were certain that he would make it. Jack's children were puzzled. "We always thought Mom was the strong one," they said to me. "We don't know how Dad's coping." "Why don't you ask him?" I replied. "We did!" they responded. "Dad said that he could deal with anything as long as he 'has the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.' "
