It was called friendship cake...
It was called "friendship cake." Actually, it was a mixture of flour, milk, yeast and an assortment of other ingredients sloshing around in a covered plastic bowl. The name came from the way in which the mixture was intended to be handled. Precise directions called for the handler of the ingredients to regularly split the mixture, giving roughly half of it away to a "friend." The two friends were then instructed to "feed" or replenish their portions for a specified number of days and then share half of that amount with other friends.
