It was in 1879 that Thomas Edison hit upon the right combination of carbon filament and vacuum tube. Thus, the incandescent light bulb was effectively created for commercial use, and the world has not been the same since. (The history of experiments with incandescent lighting goes back to at least 1802 and involved 24 inventors from five countries.) Headlines announced, "Edison's Light." Within three years the Pearl Street Station of the Edison Electric Light Company was lighting up homes and businesses in a section of blocks in New York City.
