It is very popular today to attempt to discredit the Bible. Even in the Christian church, there are scholars who declare that the Bible is simply the product of early Christians' hopes and expectations. Dr. Harry Cook, a Detroit-area minister, recently commented in a Detroit newspaper that the film by Mel Gibson of the passion of Christ was simply a story, just like the imaginary story told in the gospels on which it was based. In the secular world in which we live, any quote from the Bible is greeted with disdain, "Don't quote me the Bible." For many, the Bible has no place in their lives.
However, a judge recently concluded that the Bible might have more of an impact than many will admit. On May 23, 2003, Judge John Vigil ordered a new sentencing hearing for Robert Harlan, saying the jury deciding his case had improperly relied on biblical passages to determine his punishment. He had been sentenced to death for the 1995 kidnapping, rape, and murder of 25-year-old Rhonda Maloney. By making this ruling, the judge has given backhanded support to our belief that the Word of God is powerful; in this case, so powerful that it affected an entire jury even when it was not intended.
The fact is that the Bible is powerful and effective. Not only does it provide us with the way of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, but it also equips us with all that is necessary to live a life acceptable to God. It is able to make us the complete persons that God originally conceived.
