It took three years for the transition to be complete. When Paula moved from the middle of New York City to America's heartland, she was a woman accustomed to noise, a hectic schedule, and keeping a wary alertness about her. Her move to a rural agricultural area with a town population of 800 was a big transition. Her husband had landed a job in Arkansas, and they made the move with their three young children. The birds and the dog were the only ones who made noise outside the house. Her thoughts were the only thing she heard when she was alone.
