It is said that Robert E. Lee was once asked by Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederacy, about a general under his command. Jefferson Davis was thinking about giving this man a promotion. Robert E. Lee spoke very well about this individual. Later, an officer who had been present when the General spoke with President Davis, said to Robert E. Lee "I couldn't believe the nice things you said about General so and so (he mentioned him by name).
